Rajasthan Royals have ended their seven-year association with Jos Buttler. Acquired in 2018 for ₹4.40 crore, Buttler was consistently retained by the franchise and quickly became one of their key players. He remained a cornerstone for Rajasthan from 2018 to 2024. However, this time, Buttler’s name is absent from the Royals’ list of retained players.
Jos Buttler pens emotional farewell note to Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan Royals have retained six players: Sanju Samson (₹18 crore), Yashasvi Jaiswal (₹18 crore), Riyan Parag (₹14 crore), Dhruv Jurel (₹14 crore), Shimron Hetmyer (₹11 crore), and Sandeep Sharma (₹4 crore). By retaining these six players, they have exhausted their retention limit and thus forfeited the Right to Match (RTM) card in the upcoming auction, meaning they cannot use RTM to re-sign Jos Buttler.
Rajasthan Royals had the option to re-buy Jos Buttler by bidding for him in the IPL auction, but it seems unlikely that the franchise will pursue this option. Buttler’s recent social media post suggests that Rajasthan Royals may have parted ways with the English cricketer. Jos Buttler took to his Instagram account to write a farewell note.
“If it turns out that this is the end, thank you @rajasthanroyals, and everyone involved with the franchise for 7 incredible seasons together. 2018 kickstarted the best years of my cricketing career and many of my most cherished memories have come in a Pink shirt over the last 6 years. Thank you for welcoming me and my family with open arms. Could write so much more but let’s leave it there,” Buttler wrote on his Instagram account.

Jos Buttler has been a standout player for Rajasthan Royals throughout his seven seasons with the franchise. In 82 innings for RR, he has amassed an impressive 3,055 runs, making him the third-highest run-scorer in the team’s history, trailing only Sanju Samson (3,934 runs) and Ajinkya Rahane (3,098 runs).
