The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 is starting to take shape after the International Cricket Council revealed the 12 host venues and the official tournament brand.

The 14th edition of the 50-over World Cup will be played across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. It will also mark the return of the men’s cricket showpiece to Africa after 24 years.

The three host nations will come together under the theme ‘Three Nations, One Heartbeat’. The idea is to showcase the cricketing culture, diversity and traditions of the region while bringing fans from around the world together.

The venues were announced during a ceremony in Johannesburg. South Africa will have eight host cities, while Zimbabwe will have three. Namibia’s capital, Windhoek, will host matches at the Namibia Cricket Ground.

South Africa will provide the majority of venues for the tournament, with eight stadiums selected.

Several well-known cricket grounds are included in the list. Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, Kingsmead in Durban and St George’s Park in Gqeberha will all host World Cup matches.

Centurion, Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Boland Park in Paarl and Buffalo Park in KuGompo City complete South Africa’s list.

Zimbabwe will host matches in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.

For Namibia, the tournament will be a historic occasion. The country will host a senior ICC tournament for the first time, giving local supporters the opportunity to watch some of the biggest teams and players in world cricket.

World Cup returns to Africa after 24 years

The 2027 tournament will be the first Men’s Cricket World Cup to be staged in Africa since 2003.

South Africa and Zimbabwe were among the hosts of the 2003 World Cup, with Kenya also involved. That tournament was the eighth edition of the competition.

A lot has changed in African cricket since then. South Africa has gone on to host several major ICC events, including the inaugural Men’s T20 World Cup in 2007 and the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023.

The country has also hosted multiple Under-19 World Cups.

Zimbabwe and Namibia have also continued to develop their cricket infrastructure. Both countries hosted the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup earlier this year.

For Namibia, though, the 2027 tournament will carry extra significance. Hosting a senior ICC event will be a major moment for the country and could give the sport another boost at the grassroots level.

What does ‘Three Nations, One Heartbeat’ mean?

The tournament’s official theme is ‘Three Nations, One Heartbeat.’

It reflects the partnership between South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, while also highlighting the different cultures and communities that make up the region.

The concept of Ubuntu is another important part of the tournament identity. It is commonly translated as “I am, because we are”, focusing on community, connection and the idea that people are stronger when they come together.

The organizers also want the World Cup to celebrate the region’s cultural diversity. The tournament will bring together fans from different countries, backgrounds and communities.

According to the organizers, the event will showcase 29 officially recognized languages and the many different identities found across the three host nations.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the announcement was an important step towards the 2027 tournament.

“This marks an exciting milestone on the road to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027,” ICC Chairman Jay Shah said.

“The unveiling of the host cities and the tournament brand signals the start of a journey that will unite fans around the world and build anticipation for one of our sport’s biggest global events.

“The return of this prestigious tournament to Africa after 24 years is a landmark moment for cricket. We are confident that South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will deliver an unforgettable event, showcasing the warmth, passion and rich diversity that make this region truly unique.”

14 teams and 57 matches

The 2027 World Cup will feature 14 teams and 57 matches.

The tournament will use a new three-stage format, designed to create more competitive matches and give teams more opportunities to progress.

The first stage will involve the three teams ranked from 12th to 14th. They will play a round-robin Super Series, with the winner moving into the next stage.

The main competition will then begin with 12 teams split into two groups of six.

Super Series3Round-robinWinner advances
Group Stage12Two groups of sixTop teams progress
Super 77Round-robinTop four reach semi-finals

The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super 7 stage. The next-best team from both groups will also join them, making it a seven-team competition. The Super 7 stage will consist of 21 matches. Every team will play the other six sides, with the top four moving into the semi-finals. The team finishing first will face the fourth-placed side, while the second-placed team will take on the third-placed team.

A new look for the 2027 World Cup

The tournament brand has also been designed to give the 2027 World Cup its own identity.

The main visual element is based on a single geometric shape inspired by the African wire bowl. The design uses colours connected with the three host countries and the wider region.

The colour palette includes names such as Zimbabwe Chilli, African Root, Fynbos Pop, Namib Dune, Harare Dawn and Two Oceans.

The branding is intended to reflect the energy and character of the host nations rather than simply focusing on cricket.

With the venues and tournament identity now confirmed, preparations for the 2027 World Cup have entered another important phase.

South Africa and Zimbabwe will welcome the cricket world back to countries that already have a long history of hosting major events. Namibia, meanwhile, will get its first opportunity to host a senior ICC tournament.

For fans, the tournament will offer a mix of famous cricket grounds, new venues, different cultures and a fresh competition format.

After a 24-year wait, the Men’s Cricket World Cup is heading back to Africa. And with three nations coming together under one theme, the 2027 edition is already beginning to build its own identity.
