The top positions at the Pakistan Cricket Board have been a revolving door for quite some time. The board has undergone numerous changes, whether in the chairman’s role, head coach, or team director’s position, but things have not worked out for them. The position of head coach for the Pakistan Cricket Team is currently vacant. Grant Bradburn was sacked from the role following a forgettable 2023 World Cup. Recently, the board offered the role to former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson, presenting him with a lucrative deal.
Shane Watson rejects PCB’s lucrative offer
As per reports, Watson had initially accepted the role after the PCB agreed to meet his financial demands. The Pakistan Cricket Board was ready to pay the Aussie $2 million annually, which would have marked the highest salary ever paid to an individual by the PCB. However, Shane Watson ultimately decided against taking up the role after Pakistani media publicly disclosed the details of the offer. Displeased by the media’s actions, Watson opted for a commentary stint in the IPL instead.
“Watson had initially shown interest and kept certain financial and other conditions to accept the offer. But after the board more or less accepted Watson’s financial demands the Australian was not happy that details of the proposed package were leaked out in the Pakistan media and social media.” the sources said.
In IPL 2023, Shane Watson joined Delhi Capitals as an assistant coach. However, ahead of the upcoming season, the franchise parted ways with him. He has been signed by Star Sports for commentary duties in the Indian Premier League 2024. Following this stint, he will be seen as the head coach of the MLC franchise San Francisco Unicorns. Recently, Watson served as the Head Coach for the Quetta Gladiators during the PSL 2024 season.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s search for a Head Coach continues, as both Shane Watson and Daren Sammy have rejected the role. Amidst this, PCB is likely to appoint an interim coach. Pakistan is scheduled to host the New Zealand Cricket Team for a 5-match T20I series starting April 18th.
