Delhi Capitals player Prithvi Shaw has reportedly failed the recently conducted yo-yo test at the NCA. However, the right-hander has been allowed to feature in the upcoming season of the IPL. Shaw has reportedly scored below the required benchmark point which has to be acquired in order to clear the fitness test, and this could be an alarming sign for the 22-year-old batter.
The BCCI had recently conducted a camp at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru in order to assess some white-ball players. This was done in order to identify the players for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup which is to be held in Australia later this year. In order to test the fitness levels of the players, the yo-yo test was conducted. While the other players, including Hardik Pandya who was coming back from an injury, cleared the test, young right-handed batsman Prithvi Shaw failed to reach the required benchmark.
In spite of failing the yo-yo test, Shaw will be playing in the IPL
According to the reports, Prithvi Shaw had scored less than 15, fairly below the required 16.5. Shaw however will be seen playing in the IPL as he is not in the centrally contracted players list of the BCCI. Though he, fortunately, will be able to feature in the upcoming IPL season, his fitness is a great concern in the long run. It has also been reported that his fitness issues are the reason why he is not being considered for the national side.
Shaw has made his debut for the national side in all three formats but has not been able to earn a permanent place in the side. Meanwhile, other youngsters such as Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Devdutt Padikkal are continuously being selected in the white-ball squads. The last time Shaw played an international game was back in July 2021 when India faced Sri Lanka at Colombo.
Shaw did play in the domestic circuit in the recent past. He played 4 matches for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy where he could only manage 107 runs at a 26.75 average. It has also been said that Shaw’s recent yo-yo test failure might be a result of tiredness from playing red-ball matches in the domestic circuit.
However, as the 22-year-old has been cleared to play the IPL, he must be using the opportunity to regain fitness. A good IPL season might put him back into contention for a spot in the national side. Delhi Capitals will be starting their season against Mumbai Indians on the 27th of March.
