The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is just about three months away. Ahead of the marquee event, the Indian Premier League season will take place. Indian selectors may name a squad for the tournament based on IPL performances. The Indian men’s cricket team hasn’t won any ICC event since lifting the 2013 Champions Trophy, and with each passing ICC event, pressure mounts on the BCCI. Now, the cricket board is even prepared to make harsh decisions to field a winning XI. According to reports, the Jay Shah-led board is not considering Virat Kohli as a fit for the Indian squad.
Virat Kohli likely to be dropped from India’s T20 World Cup 2024 Squad
Since the last T20 World Cup in 2022, Virat Kohli has participated in only one T20I series. Following the loss in the 2022 semi-final, the Indian team entered a transition phase, providing opportunities to numerous young players. Even Rohit Sharma was not considered for the captaincy role until January 2024. According to reports, the BCCI is keen on playing a young batter at the crucial no. 3 position, someone capable of scoring runs at a quick rate
According to Times Now report, the decision regarding Virat Kohli’s selection lies entirely in the hands of Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar. The two had a meeting earlier to discuss Kohli’s T20I future. Kohli made a return to the shortest format during the series against Afghanistan in January 2024. However, in the two games, Kohli could only manage to score 29 runs.
According to Times Now, the Indian management believes that the slow pitches in the USA and West Indies may not be suitable for Virat Kohli. Consequently, they have reportedly requested Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar to advise Kohli to step aside and make way for a younger player.
The report also indicates that Kohli’s selection is contingent on his performance in the IPL 2024. Should he impress the selectors during the tournament, there may be a reconsideration of the decision regarding his inclusion in the India squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
