Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is on the verge of facing suspension of one match in the ongoing IPL 2022. Rohit was penalised by the IPL authorities as Mumbai Indians failed to bowl the minimum over rate against Punjab Kings on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
According to an IPL media release, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was fined Rs 24 lakhs, while the rest of the playing eleven were fined Rs 6 lakhs or 25% of their match money, whichever is lesser.
This was Mumbai Indians’ second offence in relation to the minimum over rate. The five-time IPL champions didn’t complete their quota of minimum overs in their first match against Delhi Capitals on March 27.
Rohit was slapped with a fine of INR 12 lakhs for a similar charge. In case Mumbai Indians happen to repeat this offence, the Hitman will be penalised INR 30 lakhs along with a one-match suspension, as per the rules menioned by the IPL.
“The third and each subsequent offence in a Season as Captain of the bowling Team, the Captain will be fined Rs. 30 lakh and banned from playing in the Team’s next League Match,” the IPL rules read.
Mumbai Indians lost the match to Punjab Kings by 12 runs. Half-centuries by Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan powered the team to a commanding total of 198/5.
Mumbai Indians had the control of the chase when youngsters Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma were out in the middle. Brevis scored 25-ball 49, he smashed 28 runs off Rahul Chahar in the ninth over.
Breivs fell to a Odean Smith short ball in the 11th over and soon Tilak joined him in the dugout. Suryakumar Yadav was involved in a couple of runouts, one included West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard. Yadav smashed four sixes and a boundary before being dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the penultimate over as Mumbai Indians fell 12 runs short of their target.
Mumbai will play their next match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 16 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
