Indian Test captain, Rohit Sharma, is set to miss the opening match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rohit and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, are expecting the birth of their second child very soon. Rohit has taken paternity leave from the BCCI. However, he been named as the Test squad’s captain, with plans to resume his leadership duties in Australia upon his return.
Rohit Sharma’s Wife reponds after Aaron Finch supports Indian Captain
However, Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his disagreement with this arrangement. According to Gavaskar, it is essential for the captain to lead the team from the start of a series. If that’s not possible, he believes India should have one captain for the entire series. Gavaskar suggested appointing Jasprit Bumrah as captain for all five matches and having Rohit Sharma return solely as a player when he re-joins the squad.
However, former Australian captain Aaron Finch disagrees with Sunil Gavaskar’s stance. Supporting Rohit, Finch stated that this is a beautiful moment in Rohit’s life and he should be given as much time as he needs. Upon his return, Rohit should be handed back the captaincy.
“I disagree with Sunny on that totally. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian cricket team. If you need to stay at home because your wife’s going to have a baby… that’s such a beautiful moment… and you take all the time that you need in that regard.” Aaron Finch told ESPNCricinfo.
Meanwhile, journalist Fayed D’Souza shared this report on her Instagram account. Rohit Sharma’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, noticed the post and did not hold back from appreciating Aaron Finch’s support. Ritika responded with a salute emoji , indicating her respect of Finch’s stance.
A similar situation occurred during the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 when Virat Kohli returned to India after the first Test in Adelaide on paternity leave. In his absence, Ajinkya Rahane captained the team for the next two matches. Virat Kohli made his return as captain for the fourth Test. Despite the humiliating defeat in the first match, India made a remarkable comeback in the series, ultimately winning by 2-1 in the four-match series.
