The second game of the three-ODI series between India and the West Indies was played at Port of Spain on 24 July. The encounter turned out to be a close one which India managed to clinch on the back of Axar Patel’s late assault and the platform laid by Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.

The hosts won the toss and scored 311 runs batting first. Shai Hope played the anchor en route to his 13th ODI century while Pooran’s quickfire 74 gave some impetus to the innings.

In reply, the Indian team lost their skipper, Shikhar Dhawan, for an individual score of 13. However, his opening partner made sure India’s run-chase got off to a good start.

Shubman Gill embarrassingly fails to execute the ‘Dilscoop’

Gill’s inning was decorated with five fours. Most of them were standard cricketing shots. However, on the 4th ball of the sixteenth over, he did something cheeky.

Batting against the slow-medium-pace of Kyle Mayers with the wicket-keeper up, the 22-year-old tried to do a Tilakaratne Dilshan. Sitting on his right knee, Shubman Gill tried to ‘Dilscoop’ a good-length ball past Nic Pooran.

However, in his quest to do so, Gill failed embarrassingly.

Mayers’ lack of pace tricked him as he went through the shot much earlier than he ideally should have. The result: The ball hit the bottom of Shubman Gill’s bat and lobbed straight back to the bowler who cupped it without trouble.

The wicket of Shubman Gill was quickly followed by SKY’s. Post this, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer rebuilt the innings with a 101-run-partnership.

The latter duo’s dismissal resulted in a mini-collapse & at one point, India was in serious trouble at 256 for 6. However, Axar Patel’s late assault bailed them out of it as they won the game with 2 deliveries and 2 wickets to spare.

Patel struck three fours and 5 towering sixes in his unbeaten 35-ball-64 to guide India to another close-fought win.
