After a long wait, the BCCI finally announced India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad on January 18. Around 3:00 PM, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma revealed the team in a press conference at the BCCI headquarters. India has not made major changes and has backed its senior players.
It’s obvious that Rohit Sharma will lead the side. A big responsibility has been entrusted to Shubman Gill, who has been appointed vice-captain. Jasprit Bumrah is not yet fully fit; however, he has been included in the 15-man squad. The BCCI medical team will decide in February whether Bumrah will be able to play.
Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, and Rishabh Pant have retained their places in the ODI squad. No. 2 ranked bowler Kuldeep Yadav is the only specialist spinner in the squad, while the other three spin options— Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar—are all-rounders.
Mohammed Siraj, who was the No.1 ranked ODI bowler a while ago and played a crucial role in India’s 2023 Asia Cup victory, has been surprisingly left out. India’s pace lineup for the Champions Trophy includes Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Arshdeep Singh, with Hardik Pandya serving as the fourth fast-bowling option as an all-rounder.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who remained India’s most prolific batter in Test cricket in 2024 with 1,478 runs at an average of 54, has been rewarded with a place in the 15-man squad. However, Jaiswal is yet to make his ODI debut. Speaking about his selection, Rohit Sharma said, “We picked Yashasvi Jaiswal based on what he has done. He hasn’t played a single ODI match, but we know he has the quality and potential.”
