Suryakumar Yadav has done something truly special in IPL 2025, which other batters would dream of. The right-hander didn’t just score runs, but he etched his name into the record books by going past AB de Villiers’ record for most runs scored in a single edition.
Suryakumar Yadav, who typically bats in the middle order, achieved the feat in the recently concluded Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings. India’s T20I captain played yet another impactful knock with a quick 44 that took his tally to 717 runs in 16 matches this season.
Suryakumar Yadav breaks AB de Villiers’ record in IPL
In the process, it made him the first-ever non-opener to cross the 700-run mark in a single IPL season. In doing so, he broke AB de Villiers’ long-standing record of 687 runs from 2016, a record many thought might never be touched.
What makes this achievement even more special? He did it in fewer matches than de Villiers and with a consistency that’s simply staggering. Suryakumar Yadav has now logged 16 scores of 25-plus in a T20 season, the only player ever to do so. He registered a series of scores such as 29, 48, 27*, 67, 28, 40, 26, 68*, 40*, 54, 48*, 35, 73*, 51*, and 44.

Suryakumar’s season has also broken a 15-year-old record held by Sachin Tendulkar for most runs by a Mumbai Indians player in an IPL season. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians were knocked out of the competition by Punjab Kings in the second qualifier at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Batting first, MI posted 203/6 in their quota of 20 overs. Suryakumar scored 44 off 26 balls, including 4 fours and 3 sixes, whereas Tilak Varma scored 44 off 29 balls (2 fours, 2 sixes). On the other side of the coin, the Mohali-based franchise chased down the target successfully.
Shreyas Iyer led the batting attack by example by scoring an unbeaten 87 off 41 balls. He constructed his innings with the help of 5 fours and 8 sixes. PBKS won the game by 5 wickets with an over to spare and booked their berth in the final for the second time. They will take on RCB in the showdown at the same venue on June 3.
