We all know that picking the best Indian captain is never easy at all. The country has seen multiple legends lead with pride and success. From Kapil Dev and Sourav Ganguly to MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, each has left a unique mark on Indian cricket.

So when India’s current T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, was asked to name India’s best captain during an interview with News24, his response reflected both respect and humour.

Suryakumar Yadav picks the best Indian captain

When asked to choose India’s best captain, Suryakumar didn’t take long to answer. His pick was simple and heartfelt, and it is none other than Rohit Sharma.

“Look, I have played most of my cricket under Rohit Sharma, so Rohit Sharma,” said Suryakumar.

It wasn’t a surprising choice. India has enjoyed a golden phase across formats. The numbers speak for themselves under Rohit’s leadership. The Mumbai-born has captained India in 142 matches. Under his captaincy, Team India won 103 games, which is quite a record. Under his guidance, Team India clinched two ICC titles – T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Suryakumar has flourished under Rohit’s mentorship at both Mumbai Indians and Team India. His admiration runs deep for Rohit Sharma.

Suryakumar names the top batters of all three formats

The discussion then turned to the best batters across formats, and Suryakumar’s answers once again showed balance and honesty.

“Test cricket, Sachin Tendulkar sir. ODI cricket, 50% Rohit Sharma, 50% Virat Kohli,” he remarked.

He picked Sachin Tendulkar when it comes to Test cricket. Sachin, who is the leading run-scorer in tests, remains the gold standard in the traditional format.

On the other side of the coin, Surya picked Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in ODIs. When it came to T20 cricket, Surya’s witty side emerged. He hesitated for a moment before the interviewer jokingly suggested he should name himself. Laughing, Suryakumar replied:

“T20 will actually be a little more difficult. No one praises themselves; they can’t do it themselves. If you’re saying this, you’re copying and pasting Suryakumar Yadav.”

The response drew laughter but also served as a reminder of his humility. Despite being one of the most destructive T20 batters in the world, Surya prefers letting his performances speak for him.

Best Indian fast bowler and spinner according to Suryakumar

Suryakumar also shared his thoughts on India’s best bowlers. Without hesitation, he picked Jasprit Bumrah, calling him a nightmare in the nets.

“India’s best bowler… I think Jasprit Bumrah. I don’t play him in the nets. I love my bat and my feet. I don’t play him. I mean, I’m playing now. I’ve been watching him for so many years,” said Surya with a grin.

His humorous take only highlights how intimidating Bumrah can be, even for top-level batters. Bumrah’s lethal yorkers, deceptive pace variations, and calmness under pressure have made him India’s premier match-winner in all formats.

Suryakumar named Kuldeep Yadav when asked about the best spinner. The chinaman has showcased his ability to outfox batters, thanks to his flight, turn, and drift.

What’s next?

Suryakumar will soon be back in action. He will be leading India in another exciting challenge for the five-match T20I series against Australia. The T20I opener kicks off on October 29 in Canberra. The five-match series will conclude on November 8 in Brisbane. It will be another opportunity for the flamboyant right-hander to showcase his leadership and flair.
