Recently, a controversy erupted after Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed made contentious remarks about Rohit Sharma’s fitness. In a tweet, she wrote that Rohit is “fat” for a sportsperson and needs to lose weight. In another tweet, she went further, calling him a “mediocre player” and stating that he is merely lucky to have been handed India’s captaincy.
Meanwhile, at an event in Mumbai, a reporter indirectly asked Suryakumar Yadav about these remarks. The reporter said, “There has been a lot of discussion lately regarding Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s fitness. What are your thoughts on this?”
Suryakumar firmly backed Rohit, saying, “Over the past four years, he has led India to four ICC event finals, which is a massive achievement for the country. A player who has represented the nation for 15-20 years—I think that is a huge feat, and fitness plays a crucial role in it. I have closely observed how hard he works, both in international and franchise cricket. For me, he is right up there at the top.”
Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was also asked about India’s Champions Trophy final against New Zealand. The 34-year-old batter said, “We have been playing good cricket and will continue to do so. The final is just another game.” When asked which Indian player he would like to see perform in the final, Suryakumar said, “I want to see everyone perform, from player number 1 to 15 in the squad, as well as the entire support staff.”

Suryakumar Yadav has not played any ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final. He is currently leading the Indian T20I team and has delivered an impressive performance, securing 18 wins in the 22 matches he has captained. Earlier this year, in January-February, India clinched a 4-1 T20I series victory against England under his leadership. After a break of one month, Suryakumar will next be seen playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025.
