India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win ended their 11-year-long ICC trophy drought, providing immense relief to star players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who had been part of 10 consecutive trophyless ICC tournaments. With this victory, they felt they had reached the pinnacle of T20I cricket, leaving nothing more to achieve in the shortest format. Kohli and Rohit announced their retirements after winning the final, and Ravindra Jadeja also joined them in hanging up his boots from the format.

David Miller refutes rumours of T20I Retirement

Meanwhile, rumors started spreading on social media that David Miller, who was disheartened after not being able to take South Africa to over the line, also announced his retirement. Miller made his international debut in 2010 and played in every ICC tournament for South Africa since the 2013 Champions Trophy.

However, David Miller refuted the claim by posting a statement on his Instagram handle. The 35-year-old wrote in his Instagram story, calling the news fake. He also hinted at aiming for the next T20 World Cup by writing, “Contrary to reports, I have not retired from T20 international cricket. I will continue to be available for the Proteas. The best is yet to come.”

David Miller is now part of South Africa’s nine consecutive unsuccessful ICC campaigns. The Proteas had a golden opportunity against India in Barbados, and when David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen were at the crease, it felt like South Africa’s time had finally come. However, the Indian bowlers made a miraculous comeback.

South Africa needed 16 runs off the last over, and Miller couldn’t timed Pandya’s full toss perfectly. Suryakumar Yadav’s extraordinary effort at the boundary rope led to Miller’s dismissal. With his wicket, South Africa’s hopes dimmed, and they fell 7 runs short of the target.
