The ICC Men’s OD World Cup 2023 tournament is just two months away from getting underway. The respective teams have been prepping for the main event. England were the champions of the previous edition as they beat New Zealand based on the boundary count rule.
Australia are the most successful team in the history of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup history. The Men in Yellow have won the 50-over World Cup, a record five times, more than any other team. They last won the ICC ODI World Cup by beating the New Zealand cricket team in the 2015 World Cup final.
Cricket Australia (CA) announced the 18-man preliminary squad for the forthcoming ICC men’s ODI World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be held entirely in India for the first time. Quite surprisingly, Australia named an Indian-origin spinner by the name of Tanveer Sangha in the squad.

Tanveer Sangha operates as a leg-spinner for New South Wales and his recent performances impressed the Australian selectors. As a result, they decided to give an opportunity to the leggie. It is worth mentioning here that the bright prospect ended up as Australia’s leading wicket-taker in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup.
Rightly so, the 21-year-old earned his call-up to the national set-up. In fact, this is his second call-up to the senior team. Earlier, he was picked in the 18-man squad for the T20I series in New Zealand in 2021. For the unversed, Tanveer’s father Jog Sangha shifted his base to Sydney from his village of Rahimpur near Jalandhar in 1997.
Tanveer Sangha and his family have been living together in Sydney since then. His father who initially went to Australia for education is now working as a taxi driver whereas his mother Upneet works as an accountant. Tanveer Sangha has performed quite well in Australia’s premier T20 competition, the Big Bash League.
He has been playing BBL since 2020 and has accounted for 21 dismissals in the group stage for the Sydney Thunder franchise at a bowling average of 16.66. Tanveer Sangha has no international experience so far but based on his carrying spells, the youngster is certain to make the cut in the national set-up in the near future.
“I never watched cricket in India. I played kabaddi, volleyball and wrestling. Here, we have wrestling tournaments in winter and Tanveer would often accompany me and play in the junior bouts,” Tanveer’s father Joga Sangha told the Indian Express newspaper.
“When he was ten years old, we got him enrolled in the Ingleburn RSL Club to play cricket. I picked up and dropped Tanveer from our home in Ingleburn to the club and that meant I had to skip some of my taxi rides and work early morning or late at night,” he added in a statement.
