Earning a Player of the Match award in ODI cricket is an extraordinary achievement. The format lasts several hours and demands complete focus throughout the game. As a result, winning this award feels truly special.

It is very important for the players to handle pressure and perform at the right time. In ODI cricket, it is not just about scoring runs or taking wickets; it’s about understanding the situation of the game. Usually, this award goes to someone who truly changes the match.

The players with the most Player of the Match awards in ODIs earned recognition through authority. They delivered when uncertainty ruled the contest. Their performances forced results instead of waiting for them. Each player ruled a different era, yet all shared one trait.

1. Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar leads the ODI Player of the Match list with 62 awards. The Master Blaster has carried expectations unmatched in international cricket and still delivered decisive performances. He adjusted his approach as bowling attacks evolved and conditions changed.

The Mumbai-born often stabilized innings after the fall of early wickets. He also accelerated when the situation demanded urgency. His ability to read the match separated him from his peers. The Little Master is the leading run-scorer in ODIs with 18,462 runs, including 49 centuries and 96 fifties.

He is the first cricketer to score a double century in One-Day Internationals and he achieved the feat against South Africa in 2010. He retired from all forms of cricket in 2012, a decision that deeply upset the entire cricket fraternity. He was 40 years old when he played his final international cricket match. It was his 200th Test match on November 16, 2013, wherein he retired from all formats of the game after a legendary 24-year career, with his last innings at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

2. Sanath Jayasuriya

Sanath Jayasuriya is someone who changed the ODI momentum as an aggressive opener. He comes second on the list with as many as 48 Player of the Match awards. Jayasuriya attacked from the first over and unsettled the bowlers immediately. He forced captains to abandon traditional field settings early in the innings. His intent changed how teams viewed the opening phase.

Jayasuriya added impact with the ball as well, which strengthened his influence. Many of his awards came from short, destructive spells that altered matches beyond recovery. He proved that early pressure could decide contests before the middle overs began. Overall, he scored 13,430 runs, including 28 centuries and 68 fifties.

The Sri Lankan retired from international cricket in June 2011 during the team’s tour of England. He played his final matches (a T20 and an ODI) at the age of 41.

3. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is undoubtedly one of the best batters in modern cricket. He comes third on the list, as he bagged as many as 45 player of the match awards. This goes to show that he is one of the best in the business. More importantly, he is someone who is exceptionally good at high-pressure run chases.

The experienced campaigner is someone who can control the tempo of the game through his disciplined short selection and match awareness. He has often turned difficult run chases into composed finishes. This is why he is famously called the chase master. Overall, he scored 14,650 runs, including 53 centuries and 77 half-centuries. It is worth noting that he scored the most centuries in the 50-over format.
