Mahela-Rohit combo has always worked wonders for Mumbai Indians. Mahela Jayawardene has been busy nurturing less-known talents and making sure that they are backed. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma is an able captain. But this season wasn’t all that great for MI paltan.
With a mega-auction coming up, the five-time champions will be looking for an overhaul and build around the players that they retain. Listed below are the three players which have the highest potential of getting retained by the most successful franchise in the tournament’s history.
1. Rohit Sharma(c)
5000 plus runs at an average of 31.17 runs per inning, Rohit is as good as any IPL opener. He’s arguably the league’s most successful captain too, winning 5 IPL trophies since he started leading the Mumbai-based franchise way back in 2013.
Be it setting wicket-taking fields or getting the best out of his players, Rohit Sharma knows it all. That is a resume good enough to make him obvious first retention for the star-studded Mumbai Indians.
2. Jasprit Bumrah
Mumbai’s success coincides with Jasprit Bumrah’s meteoric rise. They won their first title in 2013 and Bumrah made his IPL debut in that very season. He’s Mumbai’s go-to bowler when it comes to breaking partnerships.
Bumrah has 130 IPL wickets at an economy of 7.42 and the fact that he always bowls the tough overs(both powerplay and death overs) makes his stats twice as good. Doesn’t give anything away and lands toe-crushing yorkers at will. Jasprit Bumrah should serve as Mumbai Indians’ bowling spearhead in the seasons to come.

3. Ishan Kishan
Left-handed Ishan hails from Patna. He’s short and compact but hits the ball long; a combination which has earned him the tag of India’s ‘pocket-sized dynamite.’ This season wasn’t as good as Kishan would’ve liked. But he did show his true capabilities by hitting consecutive 50s in Mumbai Indians’ last 2 matches.
IPL 2020 saw Kishan come into his own as he scored 516 runs from 14 matches, ending as the season’s 5th highest run-getter. Kishan also hit the most sixes that season(30 from 13 innings.) With age on his side, the 23-year-old pips Suryakumar Yadav as the side’s third possible retention.
