Travis Head didn’t impress with the bat in the Melbourne Test. In both innings, he only scored one run. However, this one run was overshadowed by his performance with the ball, as a single wicket covered up his batting performance. Travis Head took the wicket of Rishabh Pant in India’s second innings, which was a game-changing moment in the match.
However, the discussion now is not about his wicket but his celebration. After taking the wicket, he joined his thumb and index finger of his left hand together to form a circle, then placed his right index finger inside it. Fans found this celebration obscene. Indian fans took it as disrespectful and labeled it inappropriate. Some fans even call for the ICC to ban him for this act.
Former Indian batsman Navjot Singh Sidhu has also strongly condemned Travis Head’s actions. In a tweet on his X account, he called it an insult to 150 crore Indians. Sidhu also urged the ICC to punish Travis Head so that no player indulges in such disrespectful behavior in the future.

Travis Head Explains His Celebration
Meanwhile, after facing criticism, Travis Head has explained the true meaning behind his celebration. Head clarified that his celebration symbolized ‘finger on the ice.’ He mentioned that he had done something similar during the 2022 Test series against Sri Lanka. After a decent bowling performance against Sri Lanka, he had posted a picture on Instagram where his finger was placed on ice.
“The celebration is ‘the finger on the ice’. I started it in Sri Lanka (in 2022), where I put my finger on the ice and was ready to go for the next one. I didn’t expect to bowl in the MCG Test; I actually thought Sri Lanka (upcoming Test series) would be the next opportunity for my bowling,” Travis Head explained during an interview on Triple M Radio.

With this celebration, Travis Head simply wanted to show that after taking a wicket, his finger is so ‘hot’ that it needs to be placed on ice. In other words, he was emphasizing his bowling abilities. However, it seems that fans have misunderstood his celebration. Head wasn’t trying to display any indecency, but instead, he was attempting to engage in friendly banter.
