The second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the famous Wankhede Stadium had everything a big knockout game should have. There were big hits, a massive total, and one unforgettable moment in the field, and that one belonged to Axar Patel.
Yes, Axar Patel produced an incredible catch to get rid of England batter Harry Brook early in the run chase. Earlier, Team India had already put themselves in a strong position after posting a humongous total of 253/7 in 20 overs. A brilliant innings from Sanju Samson powered the team to that score. But in T20 cricket, momentum can change quickly. India needed early wickets, and Axar delivered one in spectacular fashion.
A powerful innings from Sanju Samson played a big role in that total. With such a big score, India only needed a few early wickets to stay ahead in the game. Axar provided one of those key moments.
Axar Patel takes a stunning diving catch
The moment came on the first ball of the fifth over. India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah bowled a slower delivery to Brook. The England skipper tried to move away from the stumps and hit the ball through the offside. But he mistimed the shot. The ball went high in the air towards the cover region.
Axar Patel started running backwards while keeping his eyes on the ball. The chance was not easy because the ball was dropping behind him. Still, Axar judged it well. At the last moment, he dived forward and stretched both hands. He caught the ball just inches above the ground.
The crowd at the Wankhede Stadium erupted immediately. Axar stayed on the ground for a moment after completing the catch before his teammates ran towards him to celebrate the wicket, which was a breakthrough for the team.
Axar Patel had taken a similar catch earlier
For the unversed, this was not the first time Axar has produced a brilliant catch in a major tournament. Axar had taken an acrobatic, one-handed catch in the deep to dismiss Australian captain Mitchell Marsh during the 2024 T20 World Cup Super 8 match against Australia.
That effort had also impressed fans and teammates. Axar once again showed his athletic ability with this catch against England. In T20 cricket, small moments like this can change the momentum of a match.
