The England men’s team went out on a batting rampage against their Dutch rivals from the Netherlands in the first ODI on Friday. The Eoin Morgan-led side overcame their own previous record of the highest all-time ODI score of 481 vs Australia in 2018, and registered 498 runs- just 2 short of the coveted 500-run threshold- to set a new world record.
As many as 3 England batters registered centuries in what turned out to be a super high-scoring venue at Amstelveen’s VRA Cricket Ground. Left-handed England batter Dawid Malan was among one of them, who became the second England male cricketer to have registered an international century in every format of the game.
Dawid Malan’s six lands in woods outside of stadium; Dutch players hunt for ball
Malan’s impressive knock of 125 featured only 3 sixes- which isn’t meagre by ordinary standards, but given the pyrotechnics that were on display this evening seems to a rather fair assessment. Butt one of these sixes that he hit of Dutch captain Pieter Seelaar’s bowling travelled a long way, and landed in the peripheries of the stadium.
What followed that six were truly incredible scenes, as the Dutch fielders and some of the other match officials undertook a mini-exploration of sorts to find the ball. The VRA stadium happens to be build right in the middle of a forested area, which explains the woods and trees that are in the immediate vicinity of the ground.
And so the Netherlands fielders and match officials literally had to go inside the bushes to look for the lost ball. The scene was typical of an amateur gully-cricket game that we used to play as kids, when we would be ready to venture to just about any corner in the world to reclaim our prizes sporting possessions. As it turned out, there was little respite for the people assembled at the venue, as just a few overs afterwards, they had to fetch a ball that Jos Buttler had clobbered for a maximum!
