The T20I opener between Australia and South Africa started with plenty of action and drama at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin. However, there was one unforgettable moment that left the fans in awe. Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell stole the spotlight by taking one heck of an incredible catch.
The incident happened in the final over when the game was still alive. The all-rounder pulled off a boundary catch that left the crowd stunned, which changed the course of the game. Had it not been for his incredible effort, it would have been a different story altogether in the end.
Glenn Maxwell takes a stunning catch to dismiss Ryan Rickelton
South Africa needed 21 runs from the last 5 balls. On the second ball of the over, Ben Dwarshuis bowled to Ryan Rickelton. Rickelton went for a big shot over long-on. It looked certain to be a six. But Maxwell was waiting near the rope.

Maxwell timed his jump to perfection and caught the ball with both hands above his head. First of all, he knew his momentum would carry him over the boundary. As a result, he quickly threw the ball back into the field before touching the ground outside.
The throw was controlled and stayed close enough for him to jump back in before he went on to grab it again to complete the catch. His terrific effort helped Australia win by 17 runs.
Earlier, Australia won the toss and chose to bat. The Men in Yellow posted 178 runs in their quota of 20 overs. Tim David was the pick of the batters for the Aussies. He scored 83 from 52 balls, including 4 fours and 8 sixes.

Other batters chipped in to keep the score moving. For South Africa, young pacer Kwena Maphaka was outstanding. He bowled with control and took 4 wickets for just 20 runs in his 4 overs. His spell was the main reason Australia didn’t get an even bigger total. The crowd erupted, and even fans of the other side applauded. Rickelton could only watch in utter disbelief as what seemed like a six turned into a wicket.
South Africa needed a solid start but struggled to build partnerships in the run-chase. Australian bowlers, namely Ben Dwarshuis and Josh Hazlewood, stuck to their basics and kept things tight. In the process, they took three wickets apiece.
Ryan Rickelton was the top run-getter for the Proteas. He played some attacking shots to keep the scoreboard moving, but the required run rate kept rising. By the last over, South Africa needed 21 from 6 balls. When Maxwell took that stunning catch to dismiss Rickelton, their hopes were almost gone. They ended their innings at 161 for 9, 17 runs short.
Australia beat South Africa to take a 1-0 lead in the series
The win gave Australia a 1-0 lead in the series. Maxwell’s catch will be remembered not just because it was spectacular to watch, but because it came at such an important time in the match.
T20 games are often decided by fine margins. One moment can change everything. South Africa went from having a real chance of taking the game to being close to being out of it within seconds.
Maxwell has long been known as one of the best fielders in the world, and this catch adds to his list of memorable moments. Tim David was adjudged the Man of the Match for his spectacular brand of cricket. Meanwhile, Australia will try to build on this momentum in the next game. South Africa will need to regroup and find a way to respond to stay alive in the series. The second T20I will kick off at the same venue on August 12, Tuesday.
