Indian Test captain Shubman Gill lost his cool during a tense moment on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. The new-gen skipper, who had shown great composure throughout the match, finally snapped after teammate Akash Deep almost got run out because of hesitation.
The incident happened just before the tea break. Shubman Gill, who was batting on a massive score, nudged the ball towards mid-wicket and called for a quick single. He took off immediately, but at the other end, Akash Deep was slow to react in the first place. He stood still for a moment, unsure whether to run or not.

Meanwhile, Ollie Pope at mid-on reacted quickly. He dived to his right, grabbed the ball, and fired a throw towards the wicketkeeper end. Luckily for India, the throw was off the mark. Jamie Smith had to stretch wide to collect it, which gave Akash Deep just enough time to return to his crease.

The close call didn’t sit well with Shubman Gill. He turned back after reaching the non-striker’s end and shouted at Akash Deep, saying, “Dekh kya raha hai? Bhaag jaldi se!” (Translation: “What are you staring at? Run quickly!”). It was a rare outburst from Shubman Gill, who is usually calm and collected on the field. This was also the first time he publicly scolded a teammate since becoming India’s Test captain.
Gill had good reason to be upset. If Akash Deep had gotten out, it could have broken India’s momentum. The next batters were tailenders, and Gill was still eyeing a triple hundred. He knew India needed a massive total after what happened in the Headingley Test, where they lost despite scoring 471 runs in the first innings.

Despite the tension, Gill didn’t lose focus. He went on to score 269 runs, which is his best Test innings so far. He smashed 30 fours and 3 sixes, and in the process, he broke several records. He became the first Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match in England.
The 25-year-old also broke Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid’s records to register the highest individual Test score by an Indian in England. In addition, he surpassed Virat Kohli’s 254 to claim the highest Test score by an Indian captain.
