Those were the days when JP Duminy electrified the field with his remarkable fielding efforts. When we talk about the best Proteas fielders, JP Duminy’s name stands alongside legends like Jonty Rhodes, AB de Villiers, and Faf du Plessis. The 40-year-old former cricketer has been serving as South Africa’s batting coach since 2023. However, during the 3rd ODI match between South Africa and Ireland, Duminy stunned fans by stepping onto the field to serve as a substitute fielder for South Africa.

Due to the intense heat in Abu Dhabi, several players suffered from fatigue and were unable to continue fielding. With no more available substitutes on the bench, someone from the team staff had to step in. JP Duminy, being the fittest among the staff and still possessing impressive fielding skills, was the best option.
Duminy didn’t disappoint the viewers, showcasing a brilliant fielding effort in the last over of Ireland’s innings, saving a couple of runs. Duminy had bid farewell to cricket five years ago, but with many retired players now joining T20 leagues like the Legends League Cricket, JP Duminy certainly qualifies and has the potential to excel in these leagues. However, Duminy hasn’t shown any interest in joining such leagues and remains focused on his coaching duties.

It was certainly a rare moment to see a member of the coaching staff take the field in an international match. However, there have been other incidents where team staff or even opposition players have fielded for teams in non-international matches. For example, during a 2024 T20 World Cup warm-up match, Australian chief selector George Bailey stepped onto the field for the Aussies.

In 1987, two years before his international debut, Sachin Tendulkar famously fielded for Pakistan in an exhibition match against India in Mumbai. Another such incident occurred in 2015 when India A’s Mandeep Singh fielded for South Africa A because benched Proteas players were suffering from stomach issues and cramps. Such moments exemplify sportsmanship.
