England produced a dominant performance against Team India in the third T20I at Trent Bridge to take a 2-0 lead in the series. The hosts controlled the match from the first innings and secured a massive 125-run victory.

The first T20I ended without a result because of rain, but England bounced back strongly in the second game to move ahead in the contest. India needed a strong response in the third match, but the visitors failed to challenge England in any department.

England posted a huge total of 201/7 with the help of Philip Salt’s 70 off 44 (7 fours, 3 sixes). India needed a steady start while chasing 202. As it turned out, their batting lineup collapsed under pressure. Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer destroyed India’s chase with brilliant spells. The duo ripped through India’s batting defence by taking four and three wickets, respectively.

India eventually folded for just 76 runs and endured one of their biggest defeats in T20I history. The loss also saw the team create three unwanted records, and let’s take a look at them below.

1. India record their longest winless streak in T20Is

India’s difficult run in the shortest format has now extended to five matches without a win.

The recent stretch includes defeats against Ireland and England, along with the abandoned first T20I of the ongoing series. Rain denied India a chance to end their poor run, but the team failed to take advantage when they returned to the field.

Before this, India’s longest winless streak in T20Is stood at four matches. They recorded that unwanted run twice, first in 2009 and then again in 2021. The current five-match stretch has now become their longest period without a victory in the format.

2. India suffer their biggest T20I defeat by runs

The 125-run defeat against England is now India’s heaviest loss by runs in T20I cricket. Before this game, India’s biggest defeat came against New Zealand in Wellington in 2019, where they lost by 80 runs. England surpassed that margin with a complete performance at Trent Bridge.

The hosts first built a challenging total of 201/7 and then delivered an outstanding bowling display. India’s batters struggled from the word go and had no solution to England’s bowling attack.

3. India record their second-lowest all-out total in T20Is

India’s score of 76 became their second-lowest all-out total in T20I cricket. Their lowest-ever total remains 74 against Australia in Melbourne in 2008. Against England, India never found momentum during the chase and lost wickets at regular intervals.

The top order failed to provide stability. The middle order could not rebuild the innings. England’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout and never allowed India to settle in the first place.

The team struggled to adapt to the conditions and failed to compete against a confident England side. India now face a must-win situation in the remaining two matches. After a difficult night at Trent Bridge, the focus will now be on how quickly India can recover and respond.

India’s T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer, said, “I think it was atrocious. I couldn’t use a better word, honestly. Losing by such a big margin is definitely not acceptable. First things first, I feel that we need to accept this loss and completely go back to the drawing board and see what we did wrong. Looking at the wicket, I don’t think that it was a 200 wicket, first of all, to start with. But other than that, the way we batted, we lost four (five) wickets in the powerplay. I think that itself did create the momentum, and definitely I feel that we lost over there. So, we’ve got to go back to the drawing board.”
