CSK fans are desperate to see MS Dhoni back in yellow. Now, the latest update from the CSK camp suggests that comeback day may not be far away. Dhoni has been sidelined with a calf strain that he suffered during a pre-season training camp.
Since then, Chennai Super Kings have remained cautious with his recovery. At this stage of his career, no one in the franchise wants to rush him back before he is fully ready.
That approach makes sense. Dhoni is not just another player. He is still one of the most influential figures in the dressing room, one of the sharpest wicketkeepers in the game, and someone who can change matches in a few overs.
CSK shares major update on MS Dhoni
The good news for CSK fans is that Dhoni has returned to training. He has been seen doing wicketkeeping drills in the nets and looked energetic during a recent practice session. CSK even shared a video of him with gloves on, smiling and reacting after completing a stumping in practice. Naturally, the clip created huge excitement online.
Many believed he could return against Mumbai Indians, but CSK decided not to risk it. Instead, they continued with a patient plan.
Batting coach Michael Hussey has now delivered the clearest update yet on Dhoni’s condition. According to Hussey, the veteran is making strong progress and is working hard to return soon.
“He’s progressing really well. I know he’s pushing hard to return as soon as possible, and the fans are eager to see MS Dhoni back on the field. We’re hopeful it could be in the next few games, but he needs to be close to 100% to give his best. He’s been batting well in the nets and looks in good touch; now it’s also about being able to run hard between the wickets,” Hussey told the broadcasters.

That quote says a lot. Dhoni’s batting appears ready, but match fitness is about more than timing the ball in the nets. Running between the wickets, quick turning, and explosive movement behind the stumps are just as important.
Hussey also made it clear that when Dhoni returns, it is expected to be as a wicketkeeper and not simply as a batter or Impact Sub.
“I’m quite sure he’ll be back behind the stumps. The main concern is the calf injury, it’s about the running, especially late in the innings when he may need to push hard for ones and twos. He just needs to ensure the calf is strong enough to handle that workload. From a skill perspective, we know exactly what MS Dhoni can do as a wicketkeeper, and he’s batting really well. It’s now about regaining full confidence in that calf,” Hussey added.
CSK bowling coach Eric Simmons has also stressed that Dhoni will only play when both he and the medical team are fully satisfied. That means the franchise is not looking at emotional decisions. They are focusing on the long season ahead.
If Hussey’s timeline is accurate, Dhoni could return in one of the next few matches. That would be a huge boost for Chennai Super Kings, who are beginning to gather momentum.
CSK recently crushed Mumbai Indians by 103 runs at the Wankhede Stadium, handing MI their biggest defeat in IPL history. That win lifted Chennai to fifth place on the points table with six points and a net run rate of 0.118 after seven matches.
The five-time IPL champions have secured three wins from seven matches so far. They will look to carry this momentum into their next clash against Gujarat Titans at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, April 26.
